Everybody starts his or her day differently- whether you wake up at 5am and workout each morning or you are someone who reaches for the snooze button and leaves it until the last minute to get up and ready for the day.
I personally love the mornings. They are when I feel most productive and of course I get to enjoy my favourite meal of the day… Breakfast!
However, before I have breakfast there are four drinks I religiously have each morning to wake up and energise my body for the day ahead.
These are listed below along with just some of their health benefits!
The body is made up of 70% water and after sleeping for 8 hours and not consuming any liquids our body wakes quite dehydrated. By consuming at least one glass of water upon rising it cleanses and purifies all the internal systems and purges the toxins that have built up in the body during your slumber.
If you work out in the mornings this would be a no brainer to drink water. I practice yoga each morning so I find water a necessity. I usually aim to drink at least 1 litre during yoga to hydrate my body.
However, another simple way to ensure you drink water when you wake up is to have a drink bottle by your bed. So as soon as you wake up you can drink as much or as little as you like (it is recommended to drink 3-6 glasses). But, as long as you are drinking some amount of water when you wake up your body will reap the benefits!
- Lemon and Apple Cider Vinegar Tea
The benefits of lemon for the digestive system and metabolism are endless, as are those of organic apple cider vinegar (found in the super market or health food stores). The benefits from consuming the juice of half a lemon, 1 tablespoon of pure apple cider vinegar and hot water include: improved digestion, a stronger immune system, a kick-start for the metabolism and inflammation and cancer fighting properties!
If you can’t fathom forking out money for lemons when they are out of season (as the price can rise quite a lot), one very helpful trick I use is to juice the lemons (in season) when they are cheap and make lemon ice cubes that you can then just pop into your tea in the morning. This is also a useful tip for people short on time in the mornings.
- Vegetable Juice
This is the most time consuming drink of the four, however, debatably, the most beneficial when done right! What I mean by that is, an apple, pineapple, lime and mango juice is just a fructose overdose due to all the fruit that has been stripped of its fiber and left in its sugar (fructose) form. So when it comes to juicing I recommend, 80% vegetables and 20% lemon, lime, apple or ginger to enhance the taste.
By drinking a vegetable juice each morning your body will experience a nutrient explosion to help nourish and replenish all the cells in your body! As well as getting in much needed serves of vegetables before you have even had your first meal.
- Green Tea
And last, but certainly not least, green tea! This is my favourite tea of all, plus it is loaded with antioxidants to assist in preventing cancer and improving longevity!
Many studies have concluded that green tea contains compounds that provide protection against not only cancer but also cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more!
So for obvious reasons this tea is quite popular around the world for medicinal use, especially Asian cultures where it has been used for thousands of years.
It contains some caffeine, so for all the coffee drinkers out there looking for a healthier alternative this could be a good substitute.
I would suggest finding a good quality pure green tea blend that you enjoy, and try to avoid cheaper brands that often add fluoride into the blend. If you don’t have the time to sit and enjoy a mug of tea this is also a good drink to take with you to work or school in a travel mug and sip throughout the morning.
So whether you include one, or all four of these drinks into your morning routine your body will thank you for it!
I would also suggest allowing some time between consuming the drinks and eating breakfast to allow for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.
But be sure to pack in a nutrient dense breakfast (it is the most important AND BEST meal of the day!!) for the best start to your morning.
Who knows, you might even become a morning person by introducing any of these beneficial brews into your morning routine?
Keep nourishing, Peta xx
